IMC Performs a Rare 10th Cranial Nerve Stimulator Operation

The medical team of the International Medical Center (IMC)’s Neurosurgery Department, led by Dr. Isam Khoja, a Neurosurgery Consultant, performed a rare surgery, implanting a 10th cranial nerve stimulator inside the neck for a 37-year-old patient to control the severity seizures. The IMC is the first private hospital to perform this surgery in Jeddah.
The patient had a tragic accident while on duty resulted in a serious head injury when hitting an iron piece. A brain surgery done to evacuate an intracranial hemorrhage resulted from the accident. As a result of the injury, patient developed chronic epilepsy.
Doctors prescribed him different medications with high doses to control epilepsy; patient was on five different medications for epilepsy; nevertheless, the severity of seizures never abated, negatively affecting his daily life. Last month, he sustained hand and leg fractures following a sever seizure attack. He could no longer cope with the consequences of epileptic episodes.
Medications failed to control his severe seizure episodes. However, the patient’s condition improved immensely after implementing a vagal nerve stimulator. His seizure was controlled, and patient resumed his normal life.
Besides Dr. Isam Khoja, the medical team included Dr. Thaer Alshantoot, Senior Registrar, Neurosurgery, Dr. Khalid Ali, Dr. Raed Alnajjar, nurses and the anesthesia team.
