Fozininha: Cape Verde’s goalkeeper gains 9 million Instagram followers after a historic night against Spain

Cape Verde goalkeeper Josimar José Évora Dias, better known as Fozininha, became one of the biggest stories of the FIFA World Cup after his extraordinary performance against Spain turned him into a global social media sensation.

Before the match, Fozininha had around 50,000 followers on Instagram. However, his remarkable display against one of football’s giants sparked a massive surge in interest in his account.

Within just 12 hours after the game, his Instagram following jumped to around 1.5 million followers. The number continued to rise rapidly, reaching 8 million followers within 24 hours, before climbing to more than 9 million followers two days after the historic match.

The sudden explosion in his online popularity reflected the global attention surrounding his outstanding performance, as fans around the world rushed to follow the goalkeeper who had become the hero of Cape Verde’s memorable night.

Fozininha delivered a remarkable performance in Cape Verde’s goalless draw with Spain, making 27 saves and stopping seven dangerous attempts to deny the Spanish attack. His efforts earned him widespread praise and established him as one of the standout players of the tournament.

Beyond the statistics, his story carried an emotional dimension. His mother was unable to attend the historic match and celebrate the achievement with her son. In an interview, she said: “It was a very emotional moment for me. My heart was beating very fast. I was extremely nervous, but I am very happy with everything he has achieved in this tournament.”

Travel restrictions also prevented her from making the journey, as Cape Verde had been among the countries facing additional U.S. visa requirements. Although an exemption was later announced for FIFA players and their families, it came too late for Fozininha’s mother, who had not applied for a passport for the trip.

A U.S. State Department official said the department was working to help his mother travel to the United States to watch her son play in the World Cup.

From an unknown name outside Cape Verde to a global football sensation with millions of new followers, Fozininha’s story has become one of the most remarkable personal journeys of the tournament — proving how one unforgettable performance can transform a player’s career overnight.
